Graphene Manufacturing Group

Queensland clean-technology company Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG) will establish a new Graphene Aluminium-Ion Battery Pilot Plant at Richlands supported by $2 million from the Queensland Critical Minerals and Battery Technology Fund.

GMG currently employ 26 staff at its site in Richlands, and the new project will add a further 12 fulltime positions from the second year of operation.

Delivery of the $6.3 million plant will accelerate commercialisation of GMG’s high-performance graphene aluminium-ion batteries and boost capacity.

GMG’s world-exclusive batteries are made using their unique proprietary production process to turn natural gas into high quality, low cost, scalable, ‘tuneable’ and low-to-no contaminant graphene.

The breakthrough technology has been developed in partnership with The University of Queensland’s Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology.

Graphene aluminium-ion energy storage has high energy and power densities compared to current leading lithium-ion battery technology, giving longer battery life and faster charging.

Importantly, the technology displays minimal temperature increases during charging and discharging meaning the batteries would safer and lighter.

The new plant will allow GMG to produce test cells for their batteries in Queensland rather than engaging offshore service providers, as well as develop commercial scale-up capabilities and secure market applications.

It will also leverage Queensland suppliers for engineering and electrical services for the construction of the laboratory extension.
